Badminton is a racket sport that is played on a court partitioned by a net five feet high.  The game is played with a shuttlecock ("flying creature"). Can be played as singles or pairs. The object of the game is to hit the shuttlecock over the net so that in the end the adversary can't restore the shot.  Badminton started in India in the mid-1800's. Its ubiquity expanded when English armed force officials positioned in India shipped the game to England.  In England it was designated "badminton". Eventually it spread to the United States.  And to put the bird in a play means to serve the bird.

To put the bird in play. (badminton)

To put the bird in play refers to serving the shuttlecock in order to start the game. The term “bird” was used in reference to the feathers that occupy the bottom of “shuttlecock”. By putting the bird in play is equivalent to releasing the bird or letting it fly which actually means the start of the game by first hitting the shuttlecock.

So “to put the bird in play” simply means to serve or to start the game.
