    Ionic bonds can form between nonmetals and metals, while covalent bonds form when electrons are shared between two nonmetals. Ionic bonds form only between metals and nonmetals. That's because metals “want” to give up electrons, and nonmetals “want” to gain electrons. It takes energy to remove valence electrons from an atom and form a positive ion. Energy is released when an atom gains valence electrons and forms a negative ion.

    They will becuase the charge of gasses is negative and the metals is positive so if the negative is too low for the positive u will need another negative like Cl- + Mg2+=Cl2Mg
