Matter is everything that occupies space and has mass, so, things that you see is already matter like your, pillow, bed, food and etc...

even milk powder is matter

and sugar is also made up of tiny particles Wich is also matter...

The following are the observed situations:

All of the samples has mass All of hem occupies space The sugar were dissolved in water and the taste of the water changes into sweet. The sugar and water has volume and the volume of the sugar and water mixture is more than the volume of the sum of unmixed water and sugar. When the food coloring were added to the water, the food coloring slowly spread in the water and after some time the color of the water changed.

The observe situations are evidence that can be proved that matter is made up of tiny particles.

Particles has mass, volume and can occupy space which were proven by the observation in no 1,2 and 4.  Particles were also in constant motion which were proven in the observation in no 5. The reason why the color of the water changed is the constant motion of the food coloring and water particles. The particles are very tiny that were invisible to the naked eye which were proven in the observation in no 4. Where the sugar crystal dissolves in water making it invisible. However you know that the sugar is still in the solution due to the taste of the solution.

For us to explain how these observed events give evidence that matter is made up of tiny particles. Let us give the characteristics of particles as well as some evidence that matter is made up of tiny particles.

Particle are small in size. In our observation, we can say that the particle of the sugar, water and food coloring were small in size. This were manifested in the case of the sugar particles that separated when we dissolved it in the water Particle occupy space. This is very observable in every activity that we do. Where the samples occupy space of their container. Particles are in constant motion. This can be observe in the activity where we add the food coloring into the water. You can observe that the food coloring gradually spreads in the water that proves that the particles are in constant motion.
Particles attract each other. This can be observe in the activity where we mix sugar and water where the sugar crystal separated into particles and attracts the water particle. This is the reason why the sugar became invisible however, we can still determine the presence of the sugar particle due to the sweetness of the water.

With all these observable evidence, we can conclude that matter is made up of tiny particles.

We know that anything that has mass and occupies space is matter. Then we ask the question “what is matter made of?

Matter is made up of tiny particles which we called atom. Atom is composed of three tiny particles which are electrons, protons and neutrons.

How do we infer that matter is really made up of tiny particles?

To illustrate this, Let us have an example, if you weigh a balloon, and it weighs 5 grams. Then filled it with air and weighs 10 grams. This prove that air has mass and it occupies space and even if we don’t see the air we know that it has tiny particles that filled the balloon and adds to its weight.

Another example, is when you filled sugar to water, you can see that the volume of sugar and water mixture is the same as the volume of the water without sugar. This proves that between the molecules of water there are spaces that are not filled up. This is an evidence of the particulate nature of matter. That says that between Matter there are empty spaces that are not filled up with particles.

Another is when you put food coloring in the plain water. You can observe that after adding food coloring the particles of food coloring slowly diffuses and eventually will fill up the whole container. This means that there are particles in it and it continues on moving.
